What are Porcelain, Ceramic, and Composite Veneers?

Your smile can make a lasting first impression. Mesa Street Dental is here to help make that impression a great one with cosmetic dentistry treatments such as veneers. These are thin layers of porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin that resemble the shape and color of a natural tooth. Veneers are placed on the front surface of a tooth to improve its appearance for a number of reasons.

Veneers may be beneficial for you if you have:

  • Discolored or stained teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Misshapen or disproportionate teeth (shortened or small teeth)
  • Slightly misaligned teeth
  • Teeth gaps

Unlike tooth crowns that can take a long time to create and apply, the process for veneers is much simpler, as well as cost and time-effective. Only a small portion of the front of the tooth needs to be removed, as opposed to crowns that require removing a large amount of the tooth’s surface.

Dental Veneers FAQ

Have questions about dental veneers? Mesa Street Dental, your El Paso dentist office is here to help!

Porcelain is the strongest material to make veneers from. On average, they should last at least 10 years and possibly up to 20 with good care and regular visits to your dentist.

Dental veneers are applied to the front of the tooth’s surface. No invasive treatment is necessary and only a thin layer of enamel is removed in order to place the veneer. This process should not be painful.

Your teeth and mouth will quickly adjust to your new veneers! On average this takes a week or two and you may also experience increased tooth sensitivity during this time. This can be managed by avoiding very hot and cold food and drink and also by using an appropriate toothpaste.

Dental veneers only cover the front surface of a tooth so you still need to maintain a good brushing and flossing routine to keep the rest of the tooth clean and healthy. Regular visits to your El Paso dentist will also prevent issues with the tooth under the veneer from arising.

Porcelain veneers are stain-resistant so should remain white over their lifetime. It is possible for composite veneers to get discolored over time if they are regularly exposed to things such as coffee and red wine. They do not stain as easily as your natural teeth, however, and it’s easy to avoid the issue by maintaining good oral hygiene.

While dental insurance may not cover dental veneers for cosmetic treatments, Mesa Street Dental offers an affordable dental veneers package. Each situation is different so contact us to find out more about the types of veneers we offer and which is the best for you.
